Due to the rates of teen obesity rising, more teenagers are trying to lose weight than ever before. This can be detrimental to their health because most of these teens don’t understand that their body is still growing so they need nutrients and fuel to help them develop.

Losing Weight as a Teen

Since fad diets are everywhere you turn these days, many teens turn to these first. They skip meals, exercise excessively, and take dieting pills. This causes them to feel exhausted, defeated and can even propel them into an eating disorder.

While many teenagers feel invincible at this age, it can be difficult to get through to them when you tell them that they need to eat sensibly and lose the weight slowly. Teens want what they want, when they want it. However, there are some things you can do if you know of a teen that wants to lose weight.

Lead by example

Change your eating habits and encourage the teen to do the same. Educate him or her about how eating healthy foods can help them lose weight because the calories they consume are used much more efficiently than the calories consumed from junk food, which means they are burned much easier and faster.

Exercise together

Exercising can be a chore after awhile but it can be made more fun if you have a buddy. Join the teen in some exercise such as running, aerobics, or playing a sport. You can explain that physical activity makes the heart pump faster, which will speed up metabolism and burn off more calories.

Keep a progress journal

Encourage the teenager to keep a progress journal so he or she can look back to see how well he or she has done. Another benefit is that if you write down how much you eat, you are more aware of it, and are less likely to lose control. Keeping track of the exercises the teen does can also help him or her see how much better he or she is physically.

Slow and Steady Wins the Weight Loss Race

Remember, losing weight doesn’t happen over night. It takes weeks and even months. However, changing your lifestyle into a healthy one will make it more likely that you will keep the weight off as opposed to fad diets, which usually doesn’t last long causing the person to gain the lost weight back.
