Gender-Related, Skin Disorders

Skin care isn’t just for the ladies! Establishing a sound skin care routine is one of the most important things men can do to keep healthy skin through the years. But where should you start? First, determining the type of skin you have is the first step in planning a skin care routine. The reason for this important step is that not all facial care products work on each and every type of skin. There are four types of skin and they include: Dry, Normal, Oily and Combination. Dry skin feels rough and has flaky areas. Normal skin has an even tone and no oily or dry patches. Oily skin may have pimples, large pores and is very shiny. Combination skin has areas of both oily and dry skin.

The four basic skin care products you should consider using in your daily routine are:

  • Cleanser – this will be determined by skin type and should be used twice a day. The cleanser should be removed with lukewarm water, not hot.
  • Moisturizer – one that contains sunscreen is important to protect from damage caused by the sun. Only in recent years have these products become available for men and there is still some stigma over using them. Many men feel that using anything that resembles a lotion is for women only. But healthy skin is for everyone!
  • Shaving cream – When shaving, a cream with aloe should be used to soften the skin and minimize the chance for razor burn and nicks.
  • Aftershave lotion or toner – this should be applied to help close up the pores and make your face feel refreshed post-shave.

No matter what products you decide to use they should be appropriate for your skin type. There are skin care consultations that can help you find the right products, and these consultation can be set up in the privacy of home if you’d like. Remember that healthy skin is important for both sexes.
