A new study published in the journal Sleep reports that people who have a bedtime routine are more likely to have improved sleep quality and less insomnia.
The study looked at retirees with an average age of 75. Researchers used this group because they are more likely to have sleep difficulties due to health and medications. Since health and medications are powerful effectors of sleep, the researchers figured that if bedtime routines can improve the sleep quality of the research subjects, it most likely would help individuals who are not under such conditions.
How Bedtime Routines Help You Sleep
Bedtime or daily routines signal the mind to get ready to sleep. When you start to do the things you do to get ready for slumber, your mind will signal your bodily functions to start calming. This will help you get to sleep faster and fall into deeper levels much more quickly.
Taking Up the Bedtime Routine Habit
Habits do take time to stick. It usually takes a month to develop a routine that becomes second nature. Just remember that making your routine too difficult can cause stress, which will negatively affect your sleep even more. Just take steps to relax and get ready for a restful night of slumber.
