Health, Mental Health

Many people who have been struggling with depression may consider taking herbal or natural remedies. Since many of the prescribed depression medications have a basis in plants that are in herbal remedies, it only makes sense that these natural alternative be as effective. However, it’s important to understand a few things before you change your depression medication regimen.

Interaction with other Medications

If you’re taking other prescribed medication or even herbal remedies, you should contact your doctor and discuss adding something else. While herbal remedies are natural, they still have properties that could lessen the effect of other medications or cause severe side effects from combining them.

Keep an Eye on Symptoms

It’s important that you keep an eye on your symptoms as you begin natural remedies or any new medication. No all medications work on everyone and you don’t want to enter into a severe relapse of your depression because what you are taking isn’t effective.

Side Effects and Discontinuation

Even though natural or alternative medications are famous for having fewer side effects, that’s not always the case. Some people do experience some ill effects from herbal remedies. If this happens, it’s best to either decrease your dose or discontinue it. Remember, when you lower your dose or discontinue it, contact your doctor for evaluation and help finding another treatment.

Even though natural remedies may be less expensive and cause fewer side effects, it’s important that you monitor its effectiveness for successful depression treatment.
