The causes of different types of cancer, such as breast, colon, and prostate cancer are still largely unknown. Research is beginning to indicate, however, that low Vitamin D levels may increase a person’s risk for developing these and other types of cancer.
Vitamin D is a necessary vitamin. Its presence in the body allows for the proper absorption of calcium, which is needed for the development of strong bones and teeth. As mentioned earlier, it is also being considered as important in the prevention of cancer.
Vitamin D supplements are available, but the best source of Vitamin D is the sunlight. It only takes 15 minutes of exposure to sunlight several times a week for the body to build sufficient levels of Vitamin D. Sunblock blocks the absorption of Vitamin D into the skin. But, because a person only has to receive such a short amount of direct sun exposure, the risk of developing, or increasing the risk of developing skin cancer is minimal at best.
In fact, it is now being theorized that many people’s desire to prevent skin cancer by using sunblock and covering all exposed skin, as well as the increasingly indoor lifestyle that most people live are what could be causing the rise in some types of cancer. If the Vitamin D cannot get into the body, as is the case when there is no exposed skin for the sun to touch, it cannot give the body what it needs.
It is also known that certain lifestyle changes can help prevent cancer. These include eating a nutritious diet, which includes citrus and other fruits which are naturally high in Vitamin D, and getting regular exercise. And, because walking is considered the best exercise, and the best place to walk when the weather allows is outside, a person actually receives a dual benefit-good health and enough Vitamin D.
