Some people may think that it is impossible to overdose on any vitamin, but it is. Those who take vitamin supplements can be at an especially high risk of vitamin toxicity, and this includes Vitamin D. Because the main source of Vitamin D is the sun, people may erroneously think that absorbing too much sunlight may cause Vitamin D toxicity. It doesn’t, because the body simply stores any excess Vitamin D it has absorbed.
About the only way that Vitamin D toxicity can occur is through overuse of vitamin supplements, or by combining extremely high doses of a Vitamin D supplement with Vitamin D rich foods, such as citrus fruits. In addition, those with certain medical conditions can suffer from Vitamin D toxicity, even if they are taking the correct amount.
Those who already have problems with their kidneys or abnormal liver function are especially susceptible to Vitamin D toxicity. These people should take special care to ensure they are taking the correct amount (no more than 2,000 IU per day.) Symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity include a change in heart rhythm (i.e. it begins beating too fast or too slowly); changes in bowel and bladder habits (usually constipation or increased urination); and increased thirst for which no other reason can be determined. Other symptoms include nervousness, weakness, and occurrence of kidney stones.
Treatment for Vitamin D toxicity consists of stopping all Vitamin D supplements until Vitamin D levels have returned to normal. Treatment for any underlying problems caused by Vitamin D toxicity, such as methods to dissolve kidney stones that occurred or medications to restore normal heart rhythm, may also be necessary.
