I
f you’ve ever taken a new prescription drug and experienced an increase in headaches, you may wonder what is worse, dealing with the discomfort of whatever you are taking the new drug for or dealing with the headaches.
Dealing with Headaches as a Side Effect
Headaches are a normal and common side effect to many prescription drugs. While it can be irritating, it’s also very treatable.
Your first line of defense is to take over-the-counter remedies. Before you do though, check with your doctor to make sure you can take headache remedies such as advil because some over-the-counter meds can cause an interaction with prescription drugs.
If the over-the-counter drugs do not alleviate your headaches, speak to your doctor about possible headache/migraine treatments. Many prescription migraine medications can help you. You can also do migraine preventative treatment if you experience headaches every day.
If you don’t want to take a strong migraine medication, experience side effects from the migraine medication or don’t want to take an additional prescription drug to ward of side effects from the one you are taking already, you’ll have to talk to your doctor about changing the medication that is causing you discomfort. Many times, you can have your dosage lowered and still see improvement, while not experiencing the side effects.
