We all know that foods high in fat aren’t good for weight loss or maintenance. We also know that diets high in fat can lead to heart disease. But what many women don’t realize is that fatty foods can also lead to other medical problems, such as stroke.
The Research on Diet and Stroke Risk
A new study in women’s health finds that women over 50 increase their risk for stroke 44 percent. Women who consumed trans fat were put at an even higher risk.
What’s interesting is that this new information on diet and the risk for stroke compounds the other risk factors associated with the stroke. After women reach menopause, their risk increases especially if they have a genetic disposition. So if you add in a poor diet, women are in an even more dangerous position.
How Much Fat Is Too Much Fat
According to the American Heart Association, you should only consume about 25 to 35 percent of all your daily calories. However, these fats should be from good fats such as nuts, fish and oil. Once you start going for the cookies, fried foods etc. you enter into unhealthy high fat categories. The next time you go out to eat, you might want to search the Internet for the nutrition of what you ate or are about to eat. Most restaurants have their nutrition data available. You’ll be surprised to see how much fat you really are consuming.
