Recently, I saw a commercial on TV that made me think. It started out with a rather annoying female in a restaurant that asked many questions about the food in a restaurant before ordering. She asked how the food was cooked and if she could have it made to her liking. The commercial then said something to the effect of why it was so easy to ask questions in some places but not in others while showing the same female in a doctor’s office answering no when the doctor asks if she has any women’s health questions.
Women and men too, do have a difficult time discussing personal health issues with their doctor. While discussing headaches is much more comfortable than a lack of sex drive, each is equally important to ask about. It may be stress but it also could be a symptom of an undiscovered major medical issue. You won’t know for sure unless you ask and get examined. Furthermore, if your symptoms are due to a medical issue, it’s important that you identify it as soon as possible because it increases your chances of treatment success.
So the next time you are at the doctor’s office, take some time to explore your health concerns. It may feel uncomfortable but try to understand that doctors have heard it all and they would rather know what’s going on with you than have you come in when your symptoms are so severe that treatment may be too late.
