Increase Omega 3s to Combat Depression

Are you feeling down in the dumps lately and you can’t put your finger on the reason why? Well, diet and depression often go hand in hand for people suffering mild depression, and small adjustments in the food that you eat may help you feel better about yourself and your life.

Increase Your Omega-3 Consumption

New research suggests that Omega 3s, found in fish, nuts and flaxseed can help boost your mood as long as they are included with the other omega…omega 6! Most people have no problem getting their omega-6 fatty acids because they are found in foods that people usually eat often such as meat, eggs, poultry and grain. However, people don’t always include the omega-3, resulting in an increased risk for depression.

Severe Depression Needs Professional Help

Of course, if you are suffering from depression for more than two weeks, have thoughts of harming yourself or others, you should contact your doctor for a complete evaluation. While foods can help you with your depression, it may not enough if you have a chemical imbalance, which needs correction by medication and/or therapy. If you are already seeking help for depression, incorporating more omega-3s in your diet may be helpful to your treatment regimen.
