When most people think of bone health, they immediately think about vitamin D and calcium. However, these are not the only nutrients that are essential to bone health. A new study by researchers from Tufts University and Northeastern University, suggest that fruits and vegetable are vital to decrease bone loss in older adults.
Bones loss occurs when calcium is not absorbed. This absorption slows down with age as well as not having the necessary nutrients. In this new study, the alkaline compound derived from fruits and vegetables helped the resorption as well as decreased the excretion of calcium in the body. Both which will help strengthen and decrease the rate of bones loss.
Fruits and Vegetables: How Much You Should Eat
While the study did not reveal exactly how many fruits and vegetables you should consume, it’s wise to eat as much as indicated on the food pyramid. Actually, recently an adjustment to the food pyramid shows the nutritional needs for older adults.
Bone Health at Any Age
If you’re not an older adult, it’s still important for you to think of your bones now. Once you lose bone mass, it’s nearly impossible to build it back up later on in life. Save yourself a lot of time and pain by keeping your bones healthy and strong now. Eat well and exercise often to preserve your health’s future.
