The U.S. Food and Drug Administration published a release today warning consumers and food service providers against using and serving pre-packaged Nestle Toll House refridgerated cookie dough.
Cookie dough of this kind is believed to have been exposed to E Coli contamination, and can cause food poisoning in anyone who consumes the dough or any resulting baked goods. The product should also not come into contact with cooking surfaces or other food products, as the E Coli may transfer and contaminate those items as well.
The product recal comes as a result of 66 reports of illness across 28 states since March 2009. Of these, twenty-five persons were hospitalized and 7 were diagnosed with a severe complication called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). No one has died.
All Nestle Toll House Pre-packaged refridgerated cookie dough should be disposed of. If you have eaten this product within the last few days and experienced any symptoms of food poisoning or HUS, the FDA advises that you seek medical assistance.
This is Nestle’s first food recall this year. The full press release can be found here: http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm167908.htm
