A new health study has revealed that osteoporosis drugs such as Fosamax and Actonel may help prevent breast cancer. While it’s not completely clear the reason behind this – whether it prevents the cancer from developing or if it just makes the bones strong enough to resist cancer – it’s a great benefit for older women who suffer from bone loss. Researchers are continuing to watch the side effects and true outcome of the bone drugs to find out if it certainly does reduce the risk of breast cancer, however, it could take an additional two years to know more.
Talking To Your Doctor about Your Breast Cancer Risk
While it’s possible to suffer from breast cancer even though no one in your family has, people who have family history are at higher risk. This is why it is important that you discuss your risk with your doctor. If you happen to have osteoporosis in your family history as well, it may not be a bad idea to discuss this new study with your doctor. Your doctor may be skeptical about these new findings but treating you for bone loss is important and if it happens to prevent onset of breast cancer, then that makes it all the better!
