The average monthly cost for health insurance has increased since 1999, according to an article on the National Coalition on Health Care website.
Health insurance costs for people who received their policies from their employers rose by 5.0 in 2008. Furthermore, a family of four in 2008 could expect to pay $12,700 for health coverage, which equals to about a thousand dollars a month!
High health insurance costs are attacking individuals from many different angles. Some individuals are scraping bottom financially to provide costly health insurance to their family. While others are compromising health coverage, hoping nothing catastrophic happens medically that causes them to have to pay thousands of out-of-pocket fees possibly leading to bankruptcy. Then, of course, you have people who decide not to even both with substandard health coverage and decide to risk living without it, which means if a medical emergency or issue does occur, they put themselves at risk of bankruptcy as well.
What is there to do though? In this economy, which people are losing their jobs left and right, who has the money to pay for things that might happen? People are more concerned about paying for things that ARE happening.
One of the most important things that people who are employed or unemployed need to remember is that while taking care of the present is essential, protecting your future is wise. You may feel like life is difficult now, but if a medical disaster happens in the future, that you are not financially ready for, you may lose your home and other valuable assets.
Some coverage is better than no coverage. The average monthly cost of health insurance may sound high, but if you budget your money, you’ll be able to stomach that amount much easier. When budgeting, consider your health insurance premiums costs as high priority, even if you don’t think you need it.
